Watchmen Lords Over Box Office

Malin Ackerman

Watchmen saw itself topple the weekend competition with a $55.7 million haul — the biggest 2009 opening so far.

The graphic novel adaptation did fall short of one record though — the $70 million opening for Watchmen director Zack Snyder's 300 in 2007.

Dethroned to second place after two weeks at No. 1 was Tyler Perry's Madea Goes to Jail, which reeled in another $8.8 million. Sleeper hit Taken continued to roll with $7.5 million. It now sits at $118 million after six weeks in theaters.

Oscar champ Slumdog Millionaire put up another strong showing with $6.9 million, for a $125 million total.

Not faring so well were the Jonas Brothers, whose Jonas Brothers: The 3D Concert Experience plummeted from No. 2 to No. 9. The film's $2.7 million take represents a 77.7 percent drop. Ouch.

Rounding out the top 10 were Paul Blart: Mall Cop (No. 5, $4.2 million), He's Just Not That Into You (No. 6, $4 million), Coraline (No. 7, $3.3 million), Confessions of a Shopaholic (No. 8, $3.1 million) and Fired Up (No. 10, $2.6 million).
