Stan Winston, a four-time Oscar winner for his groundbreaking special effects wizardy, died on Sunday after a seven-year struggle with multiple myeloma. He was 62.
A pioneer in the craft of combining live-action with computer imaging, Winston's memorable creations and contributions to cinematic lore include
Jurassic Park dinosaurs, Aliens and Terminators. "The entertainment industry has lost a genius, and I lost one of my best friends," California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger says in a statement cited by the
AP. "Stan's work... will live on forever."
Winton's recent projects included
Iron Man,
Terminator Salvation: The Future Begins,
G.I. Joe and James Cameron's
Avatar.
Think back: Which of Winston's creations most made you sit in the theater with jaw agape and think, "We've hit a crazy new level of special effects"?
