Question: In the late '60s or early '70s I saw movie version of The Turn of the Screw that I thought starred Marlon Brando. I've never been able to find it on video. Am I wrong?

Answer: You're only wrong in thinking that you saw a remake of the psychological thriller The Innocents (1960) with Marlon Brando. What you saw was a prequel. The Innocents, based on Henry James' novella The Turn of the Screw, is about a high-strung young governess (Deborah Kerr) who comes to believe that the children she's been hired to care for on an isolated country estate have been corrupted by the malevolent influence of their former governess, Miss Jessel, and her lover, the brutal manservant Quint. The Nightcomers (1971) is the story of Quint and Miss Jessel. Brando plays Quint and Stephanie Beacham plays Miss Jessel. Both characters are dead by the time The Turn of the Screw begins, which tells you that their S&M-tinged relationship doesn't end well.
