As Heath Ledger became the second posthumous Oscar winner over the weekend, his film, The Dark Knight, wrote itself into history books as well. The Bat sequel became the fourth film to cross the $1 billion threshold in worldwide box office, joining Titanic, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Variety reports.
The Dark Knight, which was re-released in IMAX theaters Jan. 23, has now grossed $1,001,082,160, which breaks down to approximately $533 million domestically and $567 million overseas. It trails only Titanic ($1.8 billion) as the all-time highest grosser.
In addition to Ledger's win, the superhero flick, nominated for eight Academy Awards, picked up a sound editing Oscar as well.
