Box Office Enjoys Very Good Sex

Kristin Davis, Kim Cattrall and Cynthia Nixon in Sex and the City in New Line Cinema

Sex and the City's preferred position turns out to be on top... of the box office chart, having surpassed expectations by scoring $55.7 million in its opening weekend. (Distributor Warner Bros. had anticipated something more in the nabe of $30 mil.) That makes SATC the best-premiering R-rated comedy of all time. Talk about satisfying!

Indiana Jones slipped to second with a $46 million haul, bringing its tally-to-date to $216.9 mil. The Strangers came in third with a $20.7 mil opening, while the rest of the top five was rounded out by Iron Man ($14 mil) and Prince Caspian ($13 mil).
