Borat Follow-Up To Hit Theaters in May 2009

Sacha Baron Cohen by John Shearer/WireImage.com

Bruno, the second film from comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, will be sashaying its way into theaters on May 15, 2009, Universal has announced.

That release date puts Bruno in direct competition with Tom Hanks' Angels & Demons, the Da Vinci Code prequel causing such a stir these days over in my homeland. So if the Pope is looking for a more family-friendly film to endorse for the May 15 weekend, he should definitely check out Bruno ( YouTube clips of the character's previous incarnation on Da Ali G Show are available for your perusal, Your Eminence).

Already well known to Ali G fans, Bruno is an Austrian gay talk show host whose sexually frank, confrontational interview style rivals that of Borat's. A typical skit begins thusly: "Whassup? Being gay is the new coolest thing, so I've come to the gayest part of America: Alabama!" Just as Borat revealed uncomfortable truths about race and class, Bruno seems well-poised to raise issues about sexual identity.
