Silent comedian Harold Lloyd's best sound effort, MOVIE CRAZY is partly autobiographical. Lloyd plays a Kansas boy who is enamored of the movies. In imitation of the screen dramas that thrill him, he performs elaborate, dramatic scenes for the amusement of his mother and to the chagrin of his father. Lloyd sends a letter to Hollywood offering to appear in any film of their choosing. Through a mixup, a photograph of an extremely handsome lad is substituted for Lloyd's with the letter, and soon Hollywood calls him for a screen test. Ecstatic, Lloyd hustles off to Hollywood to begin a career as a movie actor. Unfortunately, Hollywood gets more than it bargained for when Lloyd, a bumbling Kansas clod, shows up and gets himself in all sorts of slapstick trouble on the set. While the studio heads decide just what to do with him, Lloyd falls for actress Constance Cummings when he sees her made up as a Mexican girl for a scene. When he meets her again, sans makeup, he doesn't realize that it's the same woman and falls in love with her again. Cummings allows the confusion to continue, just to have fun with Lloyd. Eventually the powers-that-be in the studio decide Lloyd would be perfect for comedy pictures and they sign him to a lucrative contract. Filled with creative gags and funny bits, MOVIE CRAZY is not only a successful comedy but a fascinating behind-the-camera look at the studio system in the early days of talkies. leave a comment
