1944, Movie, NR, 85 mins

French musical shot in Paris just before the Nazis took over starring Dary as an aspiring singer too poor to get into the Moulin Rouge and prove himself. Willing to work his way to the top, Dary takes a job as an undertaker's helper and then as a caretaker to make some money. When he and his pal Baroux land jobs as caretakers of a rich man's home, the duo borrows some of the man's best clothes and crash the Moulin Rouge where Dary is able to sneak onstage and show his stuff. Of course he is noticed by the show's producer (and his mistress) and before he knows what hit him, Dary is a star. Routine stuff with a fairly interesting appearance by Josephine Baker doing one of her famed dance routines. The film introduced Dary to US audiences, with promotions billing him as "the sensational new French singing star." Though he didn't quite live up to the advanced billing, he did continue to make occasional film appearances up until 1960. (In French; English subtitles.) leave a comment
