Moulin Rouge

1952, Movie, NR, 123 mins

Jose Ferrer made his mark with portrayals of real, or famous fictional, characters (CYRANO DE BERGERAC, the Dauphin in JOAN OF ARC); his role here can be seen as a combination of the two, since Huston's treatment of the life of artist Toulouse-Lautrec takes took many liberties with the truth. Nonetheless, Ferrer does a fine job of limning the deformed (a childhood illness caused his legs to stop growing) artist, playing most of the film on his knees. MOULIN ROUGE was filmed in France and England and had a few interesting people in small roles. Look hard for horrormeisters Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing, as well as a young Tutte Lemkow (British choreographer/actor who was the Fiddler in FIDDLER ON THE ROOF). The first 25 minutes of the movie are outstanding, with a cancan sequence setting the tone for what is to come. This and other dance sequences completely eclipse similar scenes in Jean Renoir's FRENCH CANCAN and Walter Lang's CAN CAN. leave a comment
