Jose Ferrer made his mark with portrayals of real, or famous fictional, characters (CYRANO DE BERGERAC, the Dauphin in JOAN OF ARC); his role here can be seen as a combination of the two, since Huston's treatment of the life of artist Toulouse-Lautrec takes took many liberties with the
truth. Nonetheless, Ferrer does a fine job of limning the deformed (a childhood illness caused his legs to stop growing) artist, playing most of the film on his knees. MOULIN ROUGE was filmed in France and England and had a few interesting people in small roles. Look hard for horrormeisters
