Heartwarming family film starring Bainter as the widowed wife (her husband never returned from the Spanish-American War) who is left alone to raise two daughters, Shirley and Keeler, and a son, Dunagan. The action centers on her efforts to keep ownership of her home and on the older
girl's romances. Lots of homespun humor and character. Katharine Hepburn with her Bryn Mawr accent was originally slated to play the role that Keeler took, and her rejection of the script led RKO to tear up her contract. Remade in 1963 as SUMMER MAGIC with Hayley Mills.
