This was made as a television spectacular, then released in the US as a long feature after having the fat trimmed; they did not trim enough. It is the story of Moses, played by Lancaster, who came down from the burning bush with the ten commandments. The TV version, which aired on CBS as "Moses, the Lawgiver," was the basis for this movie, but several scenes were added which would not have made it past CBS's Standards and Practices Department. Burt's son, Bill, plays the young Moses. For once, Moses is not portrayed in such epic proportions that he becomes unbelievable. Lancaster shows him as a man touched by God and in awe of his being chosen. The Egyptian Pharaoh, Ferrari, and his son, Terzieff, are seen also as human beings rather than as total ogres. The cinematography is good, and the sound is superior. This was an expensive picture, and the special effects are superior. Bava's parting of the Red Sea far surpasses previous film versions. leave a comment
