Melodramatic romantic tragedy directed by famed filmmaker Wegener (DER GOLEM) and starring Negri as a widowed Russian aristocrat whose life is turned upside down by the 1917 revolution. On the eve of a long trip to her estate, Negri attends a gala ball, where she meets and falls in love with dashing young officer Keppler. The next day she leaves her 7-year-old daughter with a maid and departs for her estate, accompanied by her close friend, Diesel, who has wanted to marry her for years. Midway through the journey, their train is attacked by the Bolsheviks and Negri soon learns that both Keppler and Diesel have been captured by the revolutionaries. Diesel joins the Reds to aid his friends, and when Keppler is sentenced to die, Diesel commutes his sentence. Meanwhile, Negri has taken refuge with a priest and continues to search for her daughter, Keppler, and Diesel. When the story picks up in 1930, Negri is a nightclub singer in Shanghai, where she runs into Diesel. He again proposes marriage but she declines because she is still carrying a torch for Keppler. At a party thrown for expatriate Russians at Easter time, Negri is shocked to discover that Keppler is one of the singers hired for entertainment, and she is further stunned when it is revealed that he is engaged to a young Russian girl who turns out to be her long-lost daughter.
