A loving, dramatic comedy that resembles early Frank Capra in its patriotism and sentiment, this movie just misses on several levels but has enough humor to make you smile and enough corn to warm anyone's heart. Vladimir Ivanoff (Robin Williams) is a saxophonist with a Russian circus visiting the US on a tour. Just before leaving New York, Vladimir is in Manhattan's trendiest department store, Bloomingdale's, when he makes the decision to defect. He races around the store, chased by KGB men, and hides under a counter handled by Lucia Lombardo (Maria Conchita Alonso). After the cops come in and Vladimir tells them he's defecting, he is taken to Harlem by security guard Lionel Witherspoon (Cleavant Derricks), whose family welcomes him. It isn't long before Vladimir and Lucia are an item, and she tries to help him get official status in the US through an immigration attorney (Alejandro Rey). There is no great story to speak of, just the adjustments Vladimir must make to become an American. leave a comment
