Mortal Kombat: Annihilation

1997, Movie, PG-13, 93 mins

Anyone who really wants to see this really doesn't care what any critic has to say, so let's keep it short and simple, if not sweet. Winning the MORTAL KOMBAT tournament wasn't enough to keep the world safe from the demons of the Outworld: Emperor Shao-Kahn (Brian Thompson) -- like all bad guys, a cheater -- has reopened the portals that divide Earth and his blasted kingdom, so Liu Kang (Robin Shou) and his pals must fight a whole new pack of hateful mutants, including the four-armed Sheeva (Marjean Holden); Motaro (Deron McBee), a really nasty centaur; and Princess Kitana's (Talisa Soto) late mother Sindel (Musetta Vander), back from the dead armed with a revealing black-and-purple outfit and a scream that can crumble walls. This tedious hodgepodge of martial-arts mayhem, bogus mysticism and computer-generated special effects doesn't even pretend to have a plot: It's just one fight scene after another, featuring our old friends Sonya Blade (Sandra Hess) and Lord Rayden (James Remar, assuming Christopher Lambert's white wig), plus some new allies, including neo-million-dollar man Jax (Lynn Red Williams), comely ninja Jade (Irina Pantaeva) and dopey shaman Nightwolf (Litefoot), all pitted against all manner of freaky creeps. leave a comment --Maitland McDonagh
