A sporadically funny spoof of aliens-from-outer-space films that begins to run out of fresh ideas after the first 30 minutes. In direct contrast to the notion that visitors from another planet would have superior intelligence, the four explorers from the planet Blob are mental midgets. Bernard (Mel Smith), the most intelligent of the morons, is playing a game of "spaceball" outside the ship when his dim-witted companions accidentally shoot the ship's pod to Earth, leaving him stranded in space. Julian (Paul Bown), Sandra (Joanne Pearce), and Desmond (Jimmy Nail) land their craft in the middle of a British freeway and are immediately captured by the military. Colonel Laribee (James B. Sikking), the American ambassador, takes control of the situation but refuses to believe the scientists' conclusions that the three space travelers are just plain stupid. Meanwhile, Bernard manages to hitch a ride with a passing alien. MORONS FROM OUTER SPACE is fairly funny at times (especially when it is making fun of films like CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE THIRD KIND and ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST), but its premise wears thin quickly and the last half is pretty dull. leave a comment
