Oscar-nominated for Best Picture in 1987, this delightful romantic comedy directed by Norman Jewison and deftly scripted by John Patrick Shanley features excellent ensemble performances and an acting tour de force from Cher. A 38-year-old widow, Loretta Castorini (Cher), works as a bookkeeper and lives in Brooklyn with her very Italian-American family: her father, Cosmo (Vincent Gardenia), a prosperous plumber; her mother, Rose (Olympia Dukakis); and her grandfather (Feodor Chaliapin). Her longtime boyfriend, Johnny Cammareri (Danny Aiello), proposes to her; although not passionately in love with him, she accepts. However, Johnny must travel to his mother's deathbed in Sicily before the wedding. Meanwhile, Loretta meets Ronny (Nicolas Cage), Johnny's brother, to whom Johnny hasn't spoken in five years, and they are instantly attracted to each other. MOONSTRUCK brilliantly captures its Italian-American milieu. Director Jewison and screenwriter Shanley have fashioned a charming, funny tale of infidelity and transcendent love whose cultural setting provides both content and context. A symbol of the undeniable power and unpredictability of passionate love, the moon that glows magically over the Manhattan skyline as the events in the film transpire is there not only for Cher and Cage but also for Gardenia and Dukakis. Cher turns in an outstanding performance that deservedly won her an Academy Award for Best Actress. Although Cage stumbles at points, the supporting performances are all superb and wonderfully nuanced. The moon and the whole of the film are beautifully photographed by Oscar winner David Watkin. Simply stated, it is difficult not to be swept up by this charming picture. leave a comment
