A grim but effective crime melodrama, MOONRISE stars the pensive, expansive Clark as the son of a murderer who was hanged for his crimes. Clark is haunted by his father's past and tormented by his peers in a small southern town where his only friend is Russell, a beautiful young girl in love with him. Carey is the chief agitator; when the youth attacks Clark the latter kills his opponent in self-defense. He feels guilty of murder anyway and, despite pleas from Russell, flees to the swamps where he stays with former schoolteacher Barrymore. She sagely talks to Clark and helps him understand his motivations. When he no longer believes he is a product of "bad blood," Clark turns himself in to the law. In a somewhat lethargic film, Borzage nevertheless carefully develops his characters and makes them compelling. Russell's photography is exceptional and fine performances are rendered by all. leave a comment
