Jack Noah (Richard Dreyfuss) is a second-rate American actor shooting a film in the fictional Caribbean nation of Parador. Parador is ruled by a dictator who is not so much inhumane as he is ineffectual and inebriated. When the dictator, a dead ringer for Jack, dies, chief of police Roberto Strausmann (Raul Julia), the country's real ruler, coerces Jack into playing the late dictator, thereby ensuring a smooth transition of power that will protect the government from the threat of revolution. The prime fringe benefit of the job is the dictator's vivacious mistress (Sonia Braga). Striving to mix social consciousness with comedy, director Paul Mazursky has come up short on both counts. There are a few laughs--generated mostly by the humorous cultural details that give Parador a goofy tangibility--but in the end MOON OVER PARADOR is neither funny nor insightful. leave a comment
