A methadone fix for Merchant-Ivory addicts. Near Italy's picturesque Lake Como, just before the outbreak of World War II, spinster Vanessa Redgrave falls for stuffy bachelor Edward Fox, who's not sure what to make of her pioneering modern ways. When he develops an excruciating crush on brash young heartbreaker Uma Thurman, tasteful complications ensue. Art-house moguls Harvey and Bob Weinstein bankrolled this upper-middlebrow formula film in a transparent attempt to replicate their success as distributors of 1992's ENCHANTED APRIL. While it delivers the goods (luscious cinematography, tony British accents, costumes to die for) with ruthless efficiency, it's generally tame and completely uninspired. leave a comment
