D.A. Pennebaker's documentary of the weekend-long 1967 Monterey International Pop Festival lacks the warts 'n' all frankness of his own Don't Look Back or the terminal fascination of the Maysles' Gimme Shelter. What it has in spades is some of the Summer of Love's best music: Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, The Mamas and the Papas and, making a little rock and roll history, Jimi Hendrix.
