This wretched melodrama, set against a backdrop of altars, papal blessings, and promiscuous priests, has all the content of an empty chalice. As Fr. Flaherty, Christopher Reeve makes use of his Superman quick-change technique, switching from clerical robe to street clothes, preaching chastity while lusting after Sister Clara (Genevieve Bujold). Flaherty starts at the bottom of the church hierarchy and eventually lands a position of importance in financial branch of the Vatican. He gets mixed up with Sicilian mobster Appolini (Jason Miller) and is double-crossed when his childhood friend, Varese (Joe Cortese), skips town with a hefty chunk of the Vatican bank account. MONSIGNOR is a pretty bad picture, mainly because of a catatonic performance by Reeve. The only saving grace is Bujold, who holds the film in the palm of her hand. leave a comment
