Gabin steals another film with his performance, this time as a despondent widower who nearly commits suicide when he learns that his late wife was in love with someone else. He is given a new lease on life when he meets a prostitute, who at one time was his maid. He takes work as a valet, passing off the prostitute as his daughter. The life of Gabin's employer and family is in disarray, but Gabin gets the chance to put the household on the right track and discourages his boss's neglected wife from having an affair.
