MOLL FLANDERS

We were confident that no Defoe adaptation could possibly be worse than 1965's THE AMOROUS ADVENTURES OF MOLL FLANDERS, a feeble, sniggering TOM JONES rip-off starring a miscast Kim Novak and directed by the king of British hacks, Terence Young. We were wrong. Only loosely based on the novel, this turgid, thoroughly banal costume picture is writer/director Pen Densham's idea of a feminist message movie. It's PC to a fault: Morgan Freeman is shoehorned in as evidence of Densham's noble worldview, and Defoe's canny, ruthless Moll (Robin Wright) is reduced to a bundle of New Age clichés about women who run with wolves in search of selfhood. Needless to say, every trace of Defoe's bracing realism and social insight has been obliterated -- and what else should we have expected from the writer of THE ADVENTURES OF A GNOME NAMED GNORM? The plot, or what's left of it, was best summed up by Defoe himself: "The Fortunes and Misfortunes of the Famous Moll Flanders Who Was Born in Newgate and During a Life of Continued Variety for Threescore Years Besides Her Childhood, was Twelve Year a Whore, Five Times a Wife, Twelve Year a Thief, Eight Year a Transported Felon in Virginia, at Last Grew Rich, Lived Honest and Died a Penitent." It's all right there on the novel's title page, which is probably about as far into Moll Flanders as Densham ever got. leave a comment
