Apparently the rather dubious goal here was to prove to that young women can be just as sexist, obnoxious, and stupid as the young men in the teen sex comedies that plagued movie screens in the 70s and 80s. The makers of MODERN GIRLS have warped a fairly likable cast to fit the basic sleaziness of the story. Three LA girls share an apartment: Margo (Daphne Zuniga), Kelly (Virginia Madsen), and Cece (Cynthia Gibb). The girls' club-hopping ritual is interrupted somewhat by Kelly's sudden decision to take off in the car they all share, in the hope of salvaging her relationship with insensitive disk-jockey Ray (Chris Nash). When nerdy driving instructor Clifford (Clayton Rohner) arrives at their door looking for Kelly, Margo and Cece persuade him that Kelly will meet them at one of the nightclubs, and dorky Clifford agrees to chauffeur them. Considering that the film features three seemingly intelligent young actresses, was written by a woman, and filmed by a woman, one would think MODERN GIRLS might be a refreshing look at the lives of young women, rather than the exploitative, insensitive, and downright offensive junk that it is. leave a comment
