The first American film from French director Demy is an interesting look at 24 hours in a young man's life. Lockwood is a 26-year-old Los Angeles architect. Aware that he is about to be drafted, he quits his dull job designing gas pipes and marks his limited time. His girl friend, Hay, is an ambitious actress who doesn't understand his fears. A finance company wants to repossess his car, so he borrows money from a musician friend to pay it off. Then Lockwood sees a beautiful woman in a big car and becomes obsessed with her. He follows her to a model shop where men pay large sums of money to photograph nude women. He spends part of his money to photograph and make contact with the French woman, Aimee. After a second photo session, Lockwood learns that Aimee has taken this job because her husband ran off with another woman, leaving her stranded in the United States, and posing was the only work she could get without a permit. She invites Lockwood home, and he tells her of his fears about going to Vietnam, the uncertainty of his future, and his love for her. They spend the night together, and Lockwood gives her the rest of his car money so that she can get back to France. Lockwood returns home and finds that both Hay and his car are gone. He calls Aimee, but she has already left for France. Lockwood gets his draft notice and realizes that he can cope with and face his future. Demy is constructing a continuing body of work with this film, which uses situations, characters, and actors from several of his previous pictures--notably LOLA (1961); BAY OF THE ANGELS (1963); and THE UMBRELLAS OF CHERBOURG (1964). Songs and musical numbers include "Nothing to Do and Little to Say" (Spirit), selections from "Scheherezade" (Nikolai Andreievich Rimsky-Korsakov), and selections from the works of Johann Sebastian Bach and Robert Schumann. leave a comment
