Low-key comic charmer of '50s mobsters and a moll with something extra. Red Hook, Brooklyn, 1957: Eternally exasperated George (David Proval) is a small-time collector for capo Joey "The Heart" Aorta (Tony Sirico). Playing optimistic Lenny to practical George is the gentle Dip (the priceless Dan Moran), who dreams of building a better drinking straw. When Aorta's birthday rolls around and the forgetful duo gets caught unawares, George scrambles for a gift to outdo those of the other mobsters, who have a sentimental penchant for things like personalized brass knuckles. He literally hits on the gift that keeps on giving: Glorice (Candis Cayne), a "classy" streetwalker with a singular expertise that George knows could go down in history. Indeed, the gift goes down even better than George expected, as Aorta falls in love with this "sweet little cannoli" and proposes marriage. George and Dip only belatedly discover the dame is a dude who plans to blackmail Aorta once the "I do"'s are done — and unless George can finagle a solution, he'll be sleeping with the fishes once Aorta realizes he's been sleeping with a man. Completed in 1998, this $200,000 debut feature by USC film alum Mike Horelick and childhood chum Jon Carnoy — a New York University film grad who subsequently moved to France and directs European commercials — contrasts its candy-colored design with an understated tone that gives potential vulgarities a sitcom sweetness, as when Aorta unwittingly declares that he likes tough-cookie Glorice because "she has balls." Despite some stilted moments and blocky direction, this direct-to-video comedy scores with some classical slow-burn performances, delightful "why me?" dialogue and a couple of very clever twists, including a howler at the end. Cayne, né Brendan McDanniel, is a New York drag queen and events hostess; former boxer Gerry Cooney makes a cameo appearance in this sweet little cannoli of a picture. leave a comment --Frank Lovece
