1932, Movie, NR, 87 mins

One of the classic versions of the legend of Atlantis--the mythical culture that sank to the bottom of the sea during the height of its power. Brigitte Helm (METROPOLIS) plays the island queen whose palace halls are filled with evil and the mummified bodies of her many lovers. Filmed simultaneously in three versions (English, French, German--all with moderately different casts), it marked the beginning of the end for the great German director of the silent era, G.W. Pabst (PANDORA'S BOX). For a seven-year period Pabst turned out an unbroken string of successes, but with the change of governments in Germany his probing into the political and erotic predilections of the audience wasn't well received. Based on Pierre Benoit's novel, which also inspired Jacques Feyder's superior Atlantis tale (L'ATLANTIDE), Pabst's film was blessed with the unsurpassed art direction of Erno Metzner. leave a comment
