1951, Movie, NR, 96 mins

A Broadway revue redone for the screen, CALL ME MISTER is about Grable, an entertainer working in Japan at the time of the Korean War. She's married to Dailey, who's in the Far East, but they are separated. Dailey forges an official document so he can stay and direct a camp show in which his estranged mate is starring. He does this so he can get close to Grable and win back her hand. Not a terrifically original idea, but the jokes come thick and fast, and just when you think it's sagging, Dailey and Grable dance and/or sing. Busby Berkeley choreographed the big numbers, reuiniting with Lloyd Bacon for the first time since their collaboration on the landmark FORTY-SECOND STREET. Thomas scores as a soldier who can't adjust to military rules and regulations. Songs: "Going Home Train," "Military Life" (Harold Rome, Jerry Seelen), "I Just Can't Do Enough for You Baby," "Japanese Girl Like American Boy," "Love Is Back in Business" (Mack Gordon, Sammy Fain), "Lament to the Pots and Pans" (Seelen, Earl K. Brent), "I'm Gonna Love That Guy" (Frances Ash). leave a comment
