Low-budget independent feature has Stevenson as a black man moving his family from Louisiana to Los Angeles in the hopes of starting his own business. Though he has no credit, he realizes his dream of opening his own bakery. However, the business never does well enough to maintain itself, forcing Stevenson to abandon his bakery and take a sanitation job. The cast is all black, but the picture keeps away from this aspect, instead concentrating on the hardships all people face when pursuing their dreams. Stories like this one can easily become overly sentimental, but Andrieux doesn't fall into this trap. His only weakness is his occasional loss of control in direction, when he gives the actors free rein and they take it too far. leave a comment
