Dull depiction of the first mission to Mars by an American flight team is a plodding tale with no action until the end. McGavin and Adams, the two astronauts on the dangerous mission, encounter two dead Russian cosmonauts as they approach the planet. A third cosmonaut is found on the planet in an apparent state of suspended animation. They manage to revive him but are attacked by a strange force activated by the sun's rays. The filmmakers can be commended for portraying an alien as something other than a humanoid, but for little else. The cast is as lifeless as the story. This was the first feature to be made at Miami's Studio City Complex, which explains its poor technical aspects. Stock footage of Cape Kennedy is inserted, acting more as an obstruction than as a piece of realism. leave a comment
