MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE
starstarstarstar
Brian De Palma's spectacularly successful big-screen adaptation of the classic TV series is a gutsy attempt to reconfigure the timeworn espionage formula. Although this presold blockbuster is far from a complete success on De Palma's terms — it doesn't subvert the genre but gives it a surprisingly gentle goose — it's nimble, expertly contrived summer entertainment that doesn't insult the intelligence. At the Movies: Pitt to Take Over Cruise's Mission?

Now that the relationship between Paramount and Tom Cruise has soured, might the Mission: Impossible franchise be turned over to another of Hollywood's biggest stars? A rep for Brad Pitt tells the New York Daily News that rumblings of the fair-haired hunk heading up the next Mission are "totally made up".... Justin Long and Maggie Q are joining Bruce Willis in Live Free or Die Hard, playing a sidekick for McClane and a world-class hacker, respectively.... Charlize Theron and Tommy Lee Jones are in talks to play a police detective and a father searching for his supposedly AWOL (but perhaps murdered) Iraq War-vet son in Crash director Paul Haggis' next project. read more

MISSION: SWIMPOSSIBLE

Mission: Impossible heavyweight Ving Rhames has joined the cast of the Smallville spin-off pilot starring newcomer Will Toale as Aquaman née A.C. Curry. Rhames, whose last TV venture was USA Network's Kojak revival, will play McCaffrey, a lighthouse keeper (not to be confused with a light housekeeper) who serves as a mentor to A.C. His first bit of advice: "Steer clear of tartar sauce." read more

In a first for network television, episodes of Survivor: Panama - Exile Island, debuting this Thursday at 8 pm/ET, will be made available for download directly from the CBS Corp. website, CBS.com, effectively cutting out the middle-man distributor. The episodes will be ready for purchase shortly after midnight each Thursday and will be viewable for 24 hours afterward — at which point they'll start hissing and smoking like in Mission: Impossible, which, you have to admit, is wicked cool. read more

Screen Actors Guild Awards The...

Screen Actors Guild Awards The night actors pat each other on the back. Much like the Golden Globes, there wasn't a host. There were plenty of awkward moments of presenter chatter, and TelePrompTer problems out the Ziyi Zhang. Everyone was having issues reading the thing, except for the wonder known as Dakota Fanning. I mean, the 11-year-old was unflappable as she introduced Shirley Temple Black's life achievement portion of the evening. I seriously think she's genetically enhanced, like one of those Dark Angel characters. Some other highlights: - I much appreciated the Peter Graves-Barbara Bain Mission: Impossible reunion, PrompTer issues and all.- I admit it: While I thought the beginning "I'm an actor" monologues were supremely cheesy, I fell for them. - Apparently, if your name's S.
