Miss Mary

Maria Luisa Bemberg's follow-up to her Oscar-nominated CAMILA (1985) stars Julie Christie as Mary Mulligan, the spinsterish but attractive English governess of three in 1938 Argentina. Told in flashback, the story opens in 1930, as two girls are put to bed by Miss Mary's predecessor while their parents prepare to attend a celebration of the coming to power of a military faction that will oppressively rule the country for 15 years. The upper class has "wholeheartedly supported this break of constitutional rule."
