Jones is a wealthy doctor on a fishing trip to the ocean, where mermaid Johns forces him to take her to London. Her lower body is wrapped up and she confines herself to a wheelchair to appear as an invalid. In London her unusual beauty and charm cause men to fall in love with her, while
women are jealous, leading to disaster in several households. Johns soon becomes homesick for the sea, returning to care for her new baby. Script and direction are well paced, creating a succession of well-placed laughs. Johns is believable in a role that would normally be hard to accept. Followed
by the sequel MAD ABOUT MEN.
