Though by no means a great screwball comedy, MIRACLES recalls those films from the 1930s where zany plots and characters ruled the day. In Los Angeles, bumbling robbers Juan (Paul Rodriguez) and Harry (Christopher Lloyd) take flight after accidentally blowing up a jewelry store. Meanwhile, in another part of town Jean (Teri Garr) is leaving a party after celebrating the end of her 10-year marriage to Roger Briggs (Tom Conti), a surgeon. Roger is just leaving the hospital to attend a celebration of his own. But the two are accidentally reunited when Jean nearly runs down Juan in her car and subsequently forces Roger's car off the road. Juan takes the two hostage, then realizes he's got more than he bargained for when the couple begin fighting. Conti and Garr make an amusing team, and their constant quarreling in the midst of incredible circumstances is well played. Garr has a wonderful sense of timing, firing off her lines with dexterity. Rodriguez and Lloyd fill out the subplot nicely. When writer-director Jim Kouf sticks to the screwball aspects, he shows a real talent for frenzied pacing and makes effective use of throwaway gags. leave a comment
