Loosely based in fact, this slow-moving Disney film is an uninspired treatment of an inspiring story--the preservation of the famed Lipizzan horses at the end of WW II. Returning to the screen after a three-year absence, Robert Taylor delivers a lackluster performance as Col. Podhajsky, the head of Vienna's Spanish Riding School. Worried about the fate of his magnificent white horses as the Allies approach the Austrian capital, Podhajsky persuades a German general (well played by Curt Jurgens) to bend the definition of "art treasures" to allow him to transport the horses out of harm's way. Because the mares and stallions are separated, however, Podhajsky fears that the breed may die out, but after the Allies occupy the city, he arranges an impressive demonstration of the Lipizzans' talents for Gen. Patton (John Larch), who sees to it that the stallions are returned safely to Vienna from Czechoslovakia. Suffering from a script that doesn't seem to know whether its target audience is kids or adults, THE MIRACLE OF THE WHITE STALLIONS captures the fancy of neither, though the grace and beauty of the horses is undeniable. leave a comment
