An uneven apocalyptic thriller from young writer/director Steve DeJarnatt. MIRACLE MILE begins harmlessly enough as Harry (Anthony Edwards), a shy young musician, falls in love at first sight with Julie (Mare Winningham). They set up a rendezvous for midnight, but Harry oversleeps and is several hours late. He tries to call Julie from a phone booth to apologize, but winds up talking to her answering machine. When the phone suddenly rings, Harry impulsively answers it. On the other end of the line is a desperate young soldier who works at a missile silo. Thinking he is talking to his father, the hysterical soldier announces that American nuclear missiles have been launched and only 70 minutes remain before the retaliatory strike hits. It is a tribute to DeJarnatt's skills that he is able to keep the audience dangling on a string of hope throughout MIRACLE MILE's grim proceedings. The quirky combination of dizzy romance and apocalyptic horror doesn't always work, but there's enough to keep you hooked until the . . . climax? leave a comment
