Another disaster movie that is the embodiment of the term. It's the day of a football playoff game between Los Angeles and Baltimore. The stadium is packed, and the obligatory disaster is waiting to happen. It comes in the form of a sniper who hides out and waits for a victim, supposed to be the president of the US. It is up to Heston to save the day with the help of SWAT team leader Cassavetes. After Griffin sings the national anthem we are introduced to the various characters who are going to be in big trouble soon. Klugman is a gambler playing with mob money; Janssen and Rowlands are bickering lovers; Groh is a smoothie bachelor; Pidgeon is a pickpocket; and Bridges is a man who's just lost his job and is trying to show his family a good time. Finally it's announced that the President isn't coming, which causes the sniper to start firing away, killing Klugman, Janssen, and Pidgeon. The crowd panics with full force, causing a riot as people try to get out of the stadium. Heston stands up against the sniper fire and kills the man. This mess is no fun until the sniper starts shooting--at least that livens things up a bit. The characters are the same cardboard cutouts seen in any of a dozen disaster movies released in the 1970s. The one fresh aspect is the sniper himself. He's never named or given a phony psychological motivation; he merely exists to kill. For its TV release this was chopped by an hour and replaced with new characters and new subplots. Film editors Hannemann and Newman received an Oscar nomination for their work here. leave a comment
