The Minion: Review

After subway maintenance workers fall into a tunnel underneath Manhattan, officials call in Native American archaeologist Karen Goodleaf (Francoise Robertson), who identifies artifacts dating back 1000 years. How did items from the Holy Land wind up in a space perceived as an American Indian area? Well, it's like this: God originally locked up Jesus' half-brother Lucifer behind the portals of Hell. For centuries, a cadre of religious soldiers, known as the Templar Knights, has kept the Devil under lock and key in Jerusalem. When Karen digs up the key to Hades, which has been hidden in Manhattan, Templar crusader Lucas (Dolph Lundgren) travels to NYC to retrieve it. In the Devil's corner, the Minion (a shapeshifting creature who enters the body of human hosts) must block Lucas's efforts. Although Lucas concurs with Karen's plan to drop the key into a radioactive waste pit on her former reservation, the Minion inhabits body after body in order to stop them. Far-fetched and blasphemous, this horror-action combo makes a devilish snack. The secret of an effective fright flick lies in its ability to define its monster and credibly develop a mythology surrounding it. Despite its bible-bending flights of fancy, this nail-biter builds interest in its supernatural fiend. The story itself isn't much, but the film's personnel have studied the scripture of how to craft rock 'em, sock 'em action sequences. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
