William is an unsuccessful carnival grifter who becomes a phony clairvoyant, a ruse that works out better for him thanks to the help of Jenkins and Muse. The fake mind reader marries Cummings, who thinks William's act is authentic. When she finds out the truth, William goes straight and
tries his hand as a door-to-door salesman. As this doesn't pay too well, William again joins up with Jenkins in a scheme to tip off society folks when their mates are cheating on them. After the death of an irate husband, William is sent to jail, but Cummings promises to wait for him.
