Viewers of this shot-in-Bucharest horror sequel are likely to find themselves doubly in the dark; the lighting is so shadowy its hard to see what's going on and director-screenwriter J.T. Petty's sense of plot development runs to the inscrutable. Once upon a time, scientists tinkered with the Judas Breed, a mutated strain of cockroaches, in order to cure something called Strickler’s Disease. Unfortunately, the roaches continued to mutate and developed the ability to mimic human form. As a child, Marvin benefited from the original Strickland's Disease research; as a young adult, the asthmatic Marvin (Karl Geary) lives a bubble boy existence in the apartment he shares with his doped-up sister, Rosy (Alexis Dziena), and their irresponsible mother, Simone (Amanda Plummer). The housebound Marvin spends his time peering out the window and shooting photographs through his telephoto lens. Eventually he sees something terrifying: A second wave of mutant bug shenanigans. A neighborhood child has gone missing, he sees a cloaked figure, the Garbage Man (Lance Henriksen), with an inordinate fondness for rummaging through the trash. When Rosy's drug-dealing boyfriend, Desmond (Keith Robinson), vanishes, she begins to take her brother's claims seriously. Accompanied by Carmen (Rebecca Mader), a neighbor, Rosy breaks into the apartment of the missing boy's family. They find proof that a Mimic birth has taken place, upsetting the Garbage Man, who turns out to be a renowned researcher who hopes to profit from the illegal sale of a Mimic egg. Both the Garbage Man and the Big Bug go hunting for Marvin, who must use his wits to put a stop to the black market in bug eggs. Perry's decision to graft a REAR WINDOW (1954) rip-off onto the MIMIC mythology doesn't work; he can stage a scare but seems to have no idea how to move a plot forward in a believable way. Ultimately the film is murky when it means to be mysterious. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
