Although this buggy sequel lacks the superior special effects and novelty value of the original, it swarms along its shuddery way with a B-movie verve. Although US scientists believe they've wiped out a genetically altered strain of cockroaches, they didn't obliterate every critter. Having assumed some human characteristics, one giant Mimic (Michael Regan) scuttles through Manhattan like an evolutionary outlaw. After the Mimic annihilates Lincoln Trahn, (Bill Cho Lee) a black marketeer specializing in entymological anomalies, he embarks on a crusade to procreate. High school biologist Remy (Alix Koromzay) attracts the eye of the Mimic, who views her as a potential mate. When Remy's human suitors start disappearing, NYPD detective Klaski (Bruno Campos) suspects her involvement, but she eventually she persuades him she's not a serial killer, just a hard-working bug-lover. Meanwhile, the Military gets wind of the Mimic's renewed activity and a secret agent named Darksuit (Edward Albert) hustles to the Big Apple to beat CDC scientists to the punch. Unfortunately, while experts vie for control of the situation, Remy and two of her students get trapped inside her high school, which has become the Mimic's nesting ground. As Klaski defies Darksuit's orders to rescue Remy and her pupils, Uncle Sam's troops prepare to blast the school to smithereens. If Klaski can't outwit the Mimic and the military honchos, Remy just may end up a cockroach's dream date. Though not as creepy as MIMIC, this sequel boasts spry performances and a brisk approach to pest control. Though undermined by somewhat unconvincing special effects, this chiller still packs the zing of a drive-in era creature feature. leave a comment --Robert Pardi
