Sidney Preston (Bosley) is a government official who has been involved in a scam whereby he took the Libyans for $4 million. He's stashed his loot in four places, with a million in each spot. Sidney stops at the Apache Acres Motel and Diner where the spicy chili causes him to have a massive heart attack. At the moment, the diner is occupied by a standard group of people. Sidney goes through a lengthy and simply awful death scene wherein he recounts the history of the robbery and the fact that the money is out there. Before he gives up the ghost, he utters the first clue, "Start at the city of the bridge." The other patrons of the Apache Acres hear this confession; thus begins a crazed scramble as they practically trample each other to get out of the restaurant and on the trail of the money. By the fade-out, the viewer have been given clues as to where a million dollars is stashed, the pretext the movie's producers used to pull in an audience. It didn't work, and the picture died a quick death at the box office. If you're thinking of renting the film on videocassette in order to solve the mystery, don't bother, for in April 1988 DEG announced that 15-year-old Alesia Lenae Jones of Bakersfield, California, correctly deduced that the loot was stashed in the bridge of the nose of the Statue of Liberty. Apparently the mystery wasn't that hard to solve since 356,306 entrants submitted the correct answer. Alesia was lucky enough to have her name selected in a drawing. Financially troubled DEG forked over the $1 million as promised on April 14, 1988. The film, by the way, lost $11.5 million for the studio. leave a comment
