In an opening sequence, a black-and-white silent film shows Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev (Larry Poling) visiting America's "Farm of the Year." Years later, the farm is run by the late farmer's sons Frank, Jr. (Richard Gere), and Terry (Kevin Anderson), who have done their best but cannot continue their father's legacy. Rather than surrender the farm to the bank, they set fire to the house, barn, silo, and crops. Facing charges of destruction of government property, the brothers flee, becoming folk heroes in the process. MILES FROM HOME places its emphasis on the relationship between the brothers and their individual reactions to a tragedy that affects both of them. Gere turns in a superb performance--masterfully essaying an insecure, sensitive man who has no choice but to act tough and dangerous. Equaling Gere's performance is that of Anderson, who proves himself with his soft-spoken yet powerful delivery. leave a comment
