In an opening sequence, a black-and-white silent film shows Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev (Larry Poling) visiting America's "Farm of the Year." Years later, the farm is run by the late farmer's sons Frank, Jr. (Richard Gere), and Terry (Kevin Anderson), who have done their best but cannot continue their father's legacy. Rather than surrender the farm to the bank, they set fire to the house, barn, silo, and crops. Facing charges of destruction of government property, the brothers flee, becoming folk heroes in the process.
