Edward Weldon (Heggie) is the jury foreman at the trial of a woman accused of murdering her lover. Since the act could be considered a crime of passion, acquittal is possible until Weldon asks her if she took the dead man's money after the murder. She admits she did, which leads to her conviction and a death sentence. Heggie is considered to be responsible for the verdict, and is hounded by reporters after the trial. He steadfastly maintains that the woman is a murderess and must pay the price.
