A masochistic Italian comedy about male attitudes toward women. Vitti is on trial for murdering Giannini, and Cardinale is one of the jury members. Cardinale becomes fascinated with Vitti's account of her love affair with Giannini. Cardinale thinks Vitti's testimony offers insights into the
nature of true love, and she begins to reshape her relationship with husband Gassman. When Giannini appears, quite alive, charges are dropped against Vitti, and both couples have been enriched by the experience.
