Midnight Crossing: Review
This complicated mystery opens with a background scene as a US sailor hides a stash of money in 1959 on an island 35 miles off Cuba. The story shifts to present-day Miami, where Jeffrey Schubb (John Laughlin) struggles to make a living by chartering the yacht his father left him. In a bar one evening, his wife's boss, Morely Barton (Daniel J. Travanti), tells of the money he hid in 1959 and offers to split it fifty-fifty with Schubb, who, as the son of Barton's old CO, now has the coordinates to find the island. But Barton and Jeffrey's wife, Alexa (Kim Cattrall), plan to run off together after they get the money. The plot continues through an implausible number of twists and a thicket of confusing interrelationships. Much of MIDNIGHT CROSSING drags; several scenes meant to plant clues seem off base, and others stretch credence to impossible lengths. The cast, unfortunately, doesn't add much interest. Moreover, there is no sense of place here, although the setting could have been an effective and enjoyable part of the film.
