Rob Salinger (Dudley Moore) is the host of a typically inane TV talk show in Los Angeles. He's happily married to a busy and competent attorney, Micki (Ann Reinking), and yearns to be a father, but her breakneck schedule keeps them from having enough time to even try for a child. Rob meets Maude (Amy Irving), a seductive cellist who sets her sights on him. She has no idea that he's married, and he manages to carry off the deception until she announces that she's pregnant. Rob does the proper thing and marries Maude, believing that bigamy is the only answer to his problem. When Micki gets pregnant, too, and starts consulting the same gynecology team as Maude, the fun heats up. For all his character's shoddy behavior, Moore is so engaging in the role that he can't be faulted--he persuades us that he has been trapped by fate. The denouement is less than satisfying but does come as a mild surprise. MICKI & MAUDE has some very funny scenes and excellent acting from all the performers. It begins a bit slowly but builds well and winds up in a comic celebration. leave a comment
