Erich von Stroheim's THE MERRY WIDOW is a very free adaptation of the famous operetta (previously filmed in 1912, and remade by Lubitsch in 1934, and again as a Technicolor Lana Turner musical in 1952), which, since it's a silent film, jettisons the music, and replaces it with Stroheim's customary portrait of decadent European royalty and touches of morbid romanticism.
